...build in fire...

FIRELORD
STONE ROCK/DOOM METAL
ITALY

Firelord start up in Turin in 2007 from the ashes of a Doom Metal project named Saint Judas
founded by Mario E. Bussini few years before. In 2007 Beppe Tozza, Daniele Biffaro and Giulio Buscaglione joined the project. The band plays some covers and a couple of draft tunes heavy influenced by Black Sabbath, Count Raven, Gates of Slumber, Earthride, Saint Vitus and Wino projects, Doom scene, Stoner and Metal until '80s.
Many problems and changes happened to the lineup, until 2011 when get stable with the entrance of bass player Dario Giuva, who joins the project and partecipate to realase of the four tracks recorded in the first Firelord EP "The Burning EP".
2013' lineup is formed by Mario E.Bussini (voice, guitars), Giulio Buscaglione (drums) and Mario
Pappano (bass). The band is in studio writing new tunes for the first full lenght.

"Trying to describe firelords music style, I would say it is type of stoner-doom-metal with a footstamping groove and a additional influences of Black Sabbath. After the first song/intro "Among the snakes" "Man of mayhem" sounds more like classic metal with a punch of dirtn'roll, however this one did not impress me that much, but it still rocks! This track is followed by "Black Kommander" which has more uptempo parts in it than the first songs. It made me footwhippin and headbanging. The song "Ghost Of Eymerich" is a doomful groover which lasts over 11 minutes. At first the song comes slow and hard, but at 6.30 the tempo speeds up. The solo is a classic one which gives you a short view back into the 70's...Black Sabbath fans will totally like it! "Road to hell"continues the direction with some cool bassparts and deep guitars. "Werewolf" starts with a classic horror movie sample and goes into a straight rocking tune. The midtempo and raw voices make this song to one of my favorite songs on this debut. Finally follows the Sabbath cover "Children of the Grave"which is faster than the original. When you listen trough it and you know who's song it is...but with the voice of singer Mario Bussini  create a dirt'n'roll tribute to Black Sabbath....very very well! Last but not least, Among the snakes part II completes the album. This song is also more a bit more uptempo and heavy. The dirty voice adds up to a coherent foot masher..."

...Beware of the Goblin...

 CHRON GOBLIN
STONER ROCK/HEAVY ROCK
CANADA

From the smoke-filled rooms of university to beer-stained stages across western Canada and abroad, Chron Goblin have been spreading the stoke wherever they go. Filling bars and venues alike since their 2009 inception, the party-hardened four-piece have amassed a loyal fan base with their addictive on-stage energy as well as two intoxicating rock concoctions: a self-titled EP in 2010 and 2011’s acclaimed full-length One Million From The Top.

Since then, the band has proved their well-earned notoriety with by landing gigs with some of the biggest names in heavy music, including Vista Chino (ex-Kyuss), Orange Goblin, Weedeater, Black Pussy, 3 Inches of Blood, Bison B.C., and The Devin Townsend Project. In the spring of 2013, their talents won them the coveted contest-spot at Desertfest London, making them the first Canadians to grace the stage of the sought-after stoner-rock gold Camden festival.

This demand stems in no small part from Chron Goblin’s artful, yet accessible blend of influences ranging from riff-rock to rockabilly, Sabbath to Stray Cats. With no style-boundaries to bind them, the group avoids self-imposed stagnancy and embrace evolution.

"Late after other great reviews but also my right to say that this band is awesome, I know this for weeks but I can't find time to write it down here. Now my time has come to do this. This Canadian formation of a heavy Stoner rock band with the real rock attitude has created their own mix of excellentand high quality music. I don't want to repeat the other reviewers so I will keep it short. Chron Goblins debut album kicks ass and have create a place in our music lovers' hearts. Songs like "Control, Live for the Living, Lonely Prey or Give No More" show us the musicians from their best side. A new great band is born, beware."

Send us back to space rock days...

SENDELICA
Psychedelic Prog /Stoner/SPace Rock
UNITED KINGDOM

Wanna flow through spicy space? Then check this out!

These 6 psych-heads send your mind into outtaspace and beyond by creating some meditative psychedelic high-class stuff...
Space rock at it's finest.
Their newest record called „The fabled voyages of the Sendelicans“ include 6 songs.

With „Standing on the edge“ they warp you into their orbit.
A Heavy guitar riff combined with hypnotic effects and some mid-tempo drumming.
After this one you'll be pretty hyped for some more to come.

„Manhole of the universe“. 11min Masterpiece. Reminds me of a rough version of Samsara Blues Experiment or even a space-rock version of Tia Carrera mixed with some White Hills.
Updiving from endless delay-riffing they get into a groovy, slow kraut jam. Improving their outtaspace character by getting quiter and shortly more effect-accentuated just before setting up a solid psych-fuzz-wall again. Coolness and highness factor at least 9/10.

„ZHYLY BYLY“. Way more electronical and a bit comparable to some slower Ozric Tentacles parts. Get lost in endless space-fogs.
„Screaming and streaming into the starlit nite“. Lee Relfe on sax. Really nice harmonics for some lonely midnight milky way cruising or some sky picknicks.
„Carningli (Hill of angels)“. This one's more into ambient creating atmospheric dreamscapes.
And the last one „Spaceman bubblegum“. Ready to shake your hips? Groovy as hell. Here they come back to their distinctive mix of experimental-, psychedelic- space rock.

more black space...

BLACK SPACE RIDERS
PSYCH ROCK/SPACE ROCK
GERMANY

Giving gravitation since MMVIII !

In the fading last winter nights of 2008 JE, SLI, SAQ and CRIP entered a musty and moldy basement for the first time together: The plan was simple: Jamming ... loud and heavy, rediscovering that nearly lost feeling of getting impassioned by a pushing, pulling, droning and moving wall of self-created sound. It worked! In 2010 the self-titled debut-album was released. "Black Space Riders" triggered enthusiastic reviews around the globe and the band played a run of sweaty shows in Europe. In 2012 the band released it´s second album "Light is the new black". It showed even more influences and variety than the debut and brought the band many new followers around the globe. The following shows in 2012/13 featured a new band-member: SEB, who had contributed additional background-vocals to "Light is the new black" was presented as a second lead-vocalist.Now "D:REI" has finally arrived! On the new opus BLACK SPACE RIDERS are even more colorful, louder, softer, harder, atmospheric, gripping, and above all exalted!

It´s a pleasure and honor to make a review about this masterpiece. I loved all releases, especially the second Album. This one is better or even on the same level and that's really hard to manage, making a record "ban the Fan". In my opinion I have to say that I like their second work "Creature of No Light (Exodus, Pt. 1)" more, because it is more DOOMY but still on the same Level or even HIGHER when we're talking about effects, mixing and mastering.

The first song comes with a smooth intro and some vocal samples for about two minutes and !THEN! fasten up your seatbelts! A great Riff rings the bell and a sound like Hammond organ kicks the whole thing. After that you can hear great doubled guitar fill ins like we know it from Iron Maiden, but not really long till the next riff rocks on. And that's the way we like it! The drums make an awesome tune curtain over it, and the bass is really fat. What i really like. Ouhhh yeah and in this track I love the chorus as well.

Boom Shankar! Time for the second track. Very fat dirty,-down tuned guitars and bass growling away from the first second. Tribe Metal comes into my mind. Very cool percussion's and a huge variety of voices. The refrain sometimes reminds me of good old Sepultura times but in a different way. They combine their good old Style with some power Metal and Tribe percussion stuff and it works Boooombastic!

Now we “Rising from the ashes of our world”. Hard to get up. It starts slow, depp and hard with clean voices till they shout the whole crowd up. Again the doubled Guitars which comes more often in this record and they are stunning!. It is one of the “slower” chill out tracks on the Album, but still like a hammer at the end. A nice Solo rounds it up, I really like the lyrics. Before this baby ends, they start again the engine and then there is one of my favorite parts on the whole album. Be surprised! Now it gets a little bit more psychedelic. Track four sounds like a good old stoner song with some weird vocals and oriental grooves. A simple riff structure that kicks our asses. The almighty Riff combined with some tribe percussion's, well placed and arranged, brings the whole brew to boil.

Now the time has come for some fat Drum and Bass sounds with great clean vocal parts. In “Way To Me” they are leading but still let the genius break through with cool guitar fill ins and solos.

Nr. 6 shakes our brains with some vibrato vibes and the drums builds up a damn good stoner sound framework for the end, after about one minute. This is one of those typical old school stoner rock tracks on this baby in my opinion.

“The GOD survivor” comes along with a flanger and surprise with a genre untypical vocal structure. Sounds a little bit like good old Crossover or something. The whole mixing and mastering with all effects is well done and clearly audible in this Song. From slow chill-out parts to oriental licks, up to aggressive vocal parts is all in there. And again those awesome doubled guitar parts. can´t get enough of 'em.

The next Track let us relax a little bit with nice drums and percussion. Delayed guitars let us fly away to a place where we´re stonerheads can stay. A smooth chill out track with some clean reefer stuff.

Track Nr. 9, “Leave” is one of those oriental “turn on, tune in, drop out” tracks with strange vocals and tempts to let you lead from the sound curtain. After the "Acid part" a almighty riff pushes the “on” button and then it gets harder and has some kind of earworm factor.

Now we come to the longest Track on D:REI: Space Angel (Memitim) with a time range of about 10 minutes. The Space Angel begins smooth and psychedelic with a great phased guitar riff and the right effect. It is for sure the “trip track” of this omament. Echoes from voice samples crawl into our ears to place a earworm. Good guitar melodies gives this track the right spice and fills those ten minutes with lots of good vibrations.

Three tracks left and i already love the Album at first sight. After about 100 scrobbles it gets better and better, like it should be for a good Album. “Major Tom waits” remembers a little bit on this "tito and tarantula" sound or “Rumble”. But for sure completely different and a more doomy.

After some doom the “Letter to a young one” rings the bell before the last track starts. A little bit ska like riffing and funky fresh invite to jump as HIGH as you can before a fat bulldozer destroys everything for a better tomorrow.
Ok last but not least it gets doomy again with “The everlasting circle of infinity”. The Drums and Bass is really nice arranged here and build up a stage for a slow motion doom Track. But before they let us go a power metal like scream starts the engine again and leads in the right end for this masterpiece

...sea sludge...

IRON WALLRUS
GERMANY
DOOM/SLUDGE/NOISE

FRISCH aber DEFTIG!!
IRON WALRUS ist ein fleischgewordenes Doom/Sludge/Rock- Monster mit NoiseElementen.
Bands wie ST.VITUS, UNSANE, EYEHATEGOD, GOATSNAKE aber auch HELMET oder QUICKSAND standen hier eindeutig Pate.
Brutales Riffing, krachende Basshooks, treibendes Drumming, wütendes Shouting. Das sind IRON WALRUS.
Wer die Burschen live erlebt hat, geht in jedem Fall mit einem diabolischen Grinsen im Gesicht nach Hause!
Erst im Mai 2013 formierte sich die Gruppe aus Mitgliedern von
DAMPFMASCHINE, BROTHER LOVE KAIN, AGGRESSIVE AGE, ATOMIC PEAT, PANZERHÖLLE & GOOD WITCH OF THE SOUTH

GREY CZAR
AUSTRIA
STONER ROCK/HEAVY ROCK

Grey Czar is a four member tinnitus generating monstrosity that derives its doubtful origin from the shadows of the howling cliffs of the austrian alps. What once started as a reason to retain one's youth by repeating one's follies quickly became an unstoppable machine that slaughters every aspect of modern music.

"The new four tracked album of the mighty stoner/alternative rock formation "Grey Czar" is available now on CD,Vinyl or as digital download on bandcamp. The record is more different and mellow than their debut album. I like to see the development of the band, they form and fiddle on their sound since 2012 and so now they have found a cool own outstanding, original sound , which does not meet the standard. Thats the reason why i like this band so much. . The quality of the record is very professional and comes full and heavy, Roland Hickmann doeas a great job on the vocals again, the riffs are heavy and fat, the solos and licks perfectly adjusted and the bass keeps roillin hard. The drumer as well punches the shit out of his stack. Exactly how it should be...Grey Czar points with a great stage performance and gleam as a good live act. You can see this guys on a show of SHLGYBT on 7.march together with the Black Rainbows in Salzburg at the MARK. On the whole I can only recommend „The Men Who Harvest The Sea“ is not only for long-established stoner rock listeners, this record will appreciate the whole family including your grandmother and her cat. My favourite track on this album:All"

Assblaster fro President...

ASSBLASTER
SWEDEN
SLUDGE/DOOM/STONER METAL

The original idea with Assblaster was to get away from girls, get heavily intoxicated and feed cranked Marshalls with fuzztones from the blastiest guitars we could find. Assblaster has always been about five guys making as much heavy noise as possible. 'Blaster is not doing anything new or contributing to the scene with some crazy ass fusion of exotic music genres. This is straight up Fuzz n' Roll. In yer phace.
Things quickly got out of hand as Assblaster eventually hit the stages around town. We did the first gig at this truck stop bar deep in the woods outside Uppsala, Sweden. We expected nothing and got everything. Naked women, naked men, broken bones and a five hour collective black out. But, we've seen pictures from the gig. We looked cool. The crowd got blasted that night.
Assblaster has been playing sold out shows ever since. Gigs have been shut down due to the band being too loud, being too drunk & the crowd getting butt naked. Headlining acts hate us and the crowd loves us.
The phenomenon known as Assblaster has grown and taken a form far greater than we'd ever imagined. With a cult following and a new album the band will make 2014 into a 12 month rodeo of fuzz, beer and trashed bars.

"ASSBLASTER is not the title of a gayporn movie or something, it's the bandname of five hairy beer drinking dudes from Stockholm, they have choosen a strange name that's true, but i promise you that the music will blow the shit out of your asses...so download their free debut album and bang your beardy face to this awesome tracks...if you like Clutch, Down and Beer, you will also like the tracks of the band...stomping grooves, blues full riffs and some great powerful solos and licks, i personally can only recommend the tape. It's a typical and simple concept of a stoner rock band again...but it works well and the title "VENI VIDI BLAST!" and the muscle car fits perfectly to this male product. I'm curious how they will evolve and I'm looking forward to see these guys live in the next time!!!"

...Hola Gringo!!!

GRINGO
STONER ROCK/METAL
UK
Catacomb Records

UK guitar power is what you need! And it's exactly what you get when you listen to these 4 guys from Cleobury Mortimer. Dirty fuzz sounds and dynamic song structures all the way. Their first record „The cold burn“ is a hell of a headnut.
„Decaying Orbit“ is the first round of sword-like riffing, which find it's way to the dephts of your brains. Beware of toxicated ear canal infections in a positive way. Like i said really great accented song structure.
Short break with „Legalise it“. Compareable to „dying into light“ by Danava. Atmospheric 40 seconds but let's go further.
Your stonerhead is grooving? Yeah the reason is „Babylon“. The third killer track on this record and definitely my favorite.

The staccato sound fits quite well. It doesn't get too muddy but still fucking dirty. Cool, innovative transitions, groovy, rolling drums and a great voice. Stoner Metal at it's best. Or better Midland heaviness at it's best.
Hard to top that. Probably that's the reason why „The void“ didn't kicked me that much but it's a solid track anyway.
The second bridge arrives with „The Journey“. Spheric, somekind of a futuristic depressive mood which leads you to the right start point for „Curiosity“, the next 5 min piece with somekind of tragical not to say apocalyptic sense.
Same phenomenon with „Transmission“, the short introduction for „The cold burn“.
Head-shaking-time. Beside the heaviness there's always a great melodical aspect on it. And definitely worth to mention at this point, the solo at the end.

After another short introduction the tenth track „High Times“ arrives. Still grooving, but also in exactly the same manner like before. For my taste the beginning is a bit too focused on the vocals but ok who cares. And also they start the typical big-balls-riffing at 3:30min...from this point, it's brilliant.
„You stay“ heavy stuff...starts really doomy. Appreciated that a lot. Then they turn into some heroic let's-clench-fists parts, what was ok because they find their way back to the more focused doom part from the beginning.
„The great provider“ is in the same manner as the short introductions but this time a bit more harmonical. Floating, beautiful background with vocals, followed by the last raise your hands for the big end called „No way back“.

I even would say one of the best tracks on this record. Perfect mixture between in-your-face-riffs and fuck-you-all-melodies. Soph Day from Alunah does guest vocals in this brilliant closing track.
All in all a great debut album. Let's see what comes next from these guys.
Definitely worth a listening!

...hide from the witch...

MOUNTAIN WITCH
Germany
Stoner Metal/Stoner Rock
This Charming Man Records

Initially formed as an instrumental project by guitarist Rene Sitte and drummer Rene Roggmann, after entering the studio in the summer of 2009 the Hamburg duo emerged with a recording of what would later become Mountain Witch’s debut album Scythe & Dead Horse. A sizeable slab of heavy desert rock and extended stoner jams, the ultra limited edition vinyl release that followed soon after sold out instantly, and three years on, this year’s rerelease on the German cassette only label Witches On Fire quickly followed suit.

Since then Mountain Witch has not only recruited a third member in bass player Tobert Knopp, they have returned with a more focused and ambitious sound on their follow up album Cold River. Their first release on This Charming Man Records – the Muenster based label responsible for Die Nerven, The Moth, Messer and more – while that loose and low slung spirit of Scythe… still remains, it’s strengthened by an unmistakable 70s psych rock majesty. With vintage tones and killer riffs reminiscent of early Sabbath, their new direction also takes in the boogie of Blue Cheer, ballsy strut of Deep Purple and the ambition of Pink Floyd. A sound that doesn’t shy away from its hard rock roots and at the same time doesn’t stop long enough to rest on them.

A more structured record than anything they’ve ever laid down before, Cold River’s newest and most noticeable characteristic can be heard in the addition of Rene Roggman’s vocals and darkened lyrics. Lysergic tales spun out over haunting grooves that never stray far from the arcane acid jams that inspired them originally and can be heard here echoing across ‘Ancient Light’ and the curiously titled ‘Shrubbery The Warlock’. There’s also a distinct feeling that while the Mountain Witch of old were content to plug in and rock out, the epic guitar assaults and rhythm and doom sections of ‘Sleepers Chant’ and ‘The Covey’ give this latest incarnation a newfound purpose. One that could give the likes of Dead Meadow, Uncle Acid and former label mates Kadavar a serious run for their money.

Trading in the cosmos for the kingdom with Cold River, Mountain Witch are out for the crown… and it’s only a matter of time before they take the empire.

"A great new album of Mountain Witch is like to get a blowjob with a beer in the hand and relax in a hammock, glorious songs with the necessary fuzz, edged with a driving groove.
We all need this album, because it's good for us and the hammock is not longer not without use..."

...time for a interview with "Orchid"...

ORCHID
USA

Interview with Keith Nickel/Bass Player
1.)Why did you pick your band name? How did you form? Why did you decide to play the genre or genres you do?
Keith: The band was named after the Black Sabbath song. Orchid was Theo's brainchild. He contacted Mark originally they had played in some other bands together in the past. They found me playing in a local bar with a blues band I was sitting in with from time to time for fun. Carter was getting a tattoo at Spider Murphy's, (Theo's shop in San Rafael, California). I believe the artist working on Carter mentioned the band to him when he found out he was a drummer. Once the four of us played it was pretty clear this would be the band. We started recording and playing shows right away.

2.)Orchid released three genius albums...
How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together and what will await us for the next release?
Keith: I think mostly we have just evolved as a group. We came together all pretty well established players. It's been about growing as a team. Finding the synergy. Making the whole greater then the individual parts. It's so easy to get lost to your own ego with music. It's been a blessing to be with a group where everyone understands how to let go and find something special that none of us expected exactly. I think the future of our sound has a long way to develop and grow and I'm excited to see the transformations we hopefully will make as that happens. Right now the writing process has been a little more loose and we've been experimenting with more variations before locking in ideas. I think we will stay pretty consistent with our style but maybe a little more dangerous. ;)

3.)What't can you tell me about your last album "Mouths of Madness"?
Keith: Well, I can tell you it was a labor of love for sure.
We put a lot of ourselves into that record. It was a long drawn out process of self reflection and discovery. Much blood, sweat and tears.

4.)What's your favourite album of Orchid and explain why?
Keith: That's a really hard question. It's like asking a parent who their favorite child is.
In someways Capricorn will certainly always hold a special place since it was our first full length album together.
The memories of recording and touring for that album will not be long forgotten.

5.)Which song of yours do you like playing live the most?
Keith: One of my favorite songs to play live we rarely do. Down Into The Earth.
There is something about the way we groove together in that one that really kicks for me.
The dynamic and the swing are just right. It's not the most open jamming song, but it feels really great.

6.)What do you think of the European audience? Is there a difference to e.g. the American one?
Keith: So far the European audience seems way more excepting of us.
I guess the scene in the US is growing but Europeans seem to never have lost it.
We see young and old and everything in between at our shows and it's really great.
Even grand parents bringing grand children to the show! I've never experienced that cross over before with a band.
Hopefully we will get a chance to tour in US and get a better feel for the audience but in San Francisco it's pretty tough to get a crowd out for what we do.

7.)Tell us three things that you should not be missing on tour.
Keith: 1. Shower 2. Food. 3. Sleep

8.)What inspires you while songwriting?
What would you say is the hardest part about it? How do you and the band write songs?
Keith: Inspiration for a song can really come from just about anywhere. It's about capturing a moment,
or a feeling, telling a story, commenting on life, love, loss, beauty, hope, fear, desire, disillusion, conspiracy,
death, growthÉ The hardest part of song writing to me is finishing. Committing to being done with it.
As artists we are always striving to make it better. This can make for difficulty in completing ideas.
With Orchid the song writing process has been evolving over time.
But for the most part Theo takes the lead and the rest of us do our best to provide inspiring riffs,
and jams for him to draw from. We pretty much do all final arrangements together trying every possibility the four of us can think of.
It's tedious at times but the pay off seems worth it most of the time. Occasionally a gem like Eastern Woman just sort of appears.

9.)How long do you play the bass and what kind of equipment do you use? What sound makes you horny?
Keith: I've been playing music since I was about 7 years old. I started with the recorder and violin in 4th grade.
Moved to the bass at 10 years. I also like to play other acoustic stringed instruments such as the mandolin, banjo, ukulele.
Music with great feeling makes me horny! It can be classical or jazz, blues or rock as long as there is a sense of connection and feeling.
The sounds can be clean or dirty or heavy, or sweet, but what's done with them to communicate a sense of passion.
I use a 1970's SVT Ampeg  with 8x10" speakers live for the most part. In the studio it's always an experiment for each song.
One of my favorite sounds for bass in the studio is through a black face Fender Champ amp.

10.)Do you think that online presence is important for fans to find you and critics to find your music to write about?
Keith: Of course. We would still be playing in our local bar in front of 20 friends if it weren't for the internet.
It was over MySpace that we signed our first deal with Church Within Records.
11.)Which bands/records/songs do you like the most in the current stoner/sludge/doom scene?
Keith: I'm like the late great Duke Ellington when it comes to music classification. It's all music man.
I'm not sure I follow any particular scene. But a few current bands that have been in my playlist a lot lately are Graveyard,
Witchcraft, The  Blues Pills, Troubled Horse (Wait those are all Swedish bands! hahahaha).

12.)If aliens landed in front of you and, in exchange for anything you desire, offered you any position on their planet, what would you want?
Keith: hmmmm green women with six tits!? I don't know Maybe the surfing diplomat to earth.
I'd travel around earth to all the great surf destinations, surf, take pictures and write reports for the aliens!
13.)What moment or concert do you think was the highlight of your rock career until now?
Keith: Man, there have been so many now with Orchid. But, although it wasn't the best night for us as far as audience,
for me playing with Thin Lizzy was pretty special. I was torn at first about doing the gig. It seemed silly to fly all the Way to Germany for one show to me.
And the though of Thin Lizzy without Phil Lynott was hard for me to swallow. But man, they were so amazing! One of the bet concerts I've seen, and I've seen a lot of great ones. The whole band was great but Brian Downey and Scott Gorham were just mind blowing.
Another couple stand out shows were Roadburn and Rock Hard festivals. Just amazing audiences and great production.
14.)What would you advise young bands out there? Any tips for making good retro hard rock music?

Keith: Just play from your heart and feel it! You have to connect to the music. Be yourself. Never give up your dreams.

Big thanks for your time Keith and the nice interview...see you on the road!!!
