...croatian lovestory...

STONERHEAD PRESENTS A CROATIAN DOUBLE FEATURE FEATURED BY NENAD MANDIC(COJONES)...

THE MUSCLE TRIBE
CROATIA
STONER ROCK/STONER METAL

The Muscle Tribe stands for the youngest bastard child of Zagreb music scene, finally unleashed into the public.
The Muscle Tribe stands for four men currently playing in She Loves Pablo, Deafness By Noise, Mašinko, Declaration, Gardens Of Hiroshima... Among other bands.
The Muscle Tribe stands for a simple idea bred mid-summer of 2010.
The Muscle Tribe stands for not being ashamed of the music you like being too "something" to be good.
The Muscle Tribe stands for playing the music we love with as much power we can give, no holds barred.
The Muscle Tribe stands for rocking out so hard you'd want to go to church the next day, for something that bad-ass must surely be a sin.
The Muscle Tribe stands for the fact that keeping it simple is not doing it wrong.
The Muscle Tribe stands up for the whole night, regardless of what we have already put in, and yes, we'd like some more, thank you.
The Muscle Tribe stands tall, and will continue to do so. And we believe that's a good thing.

SHE LOVES PABLO
CROATIA
STONER ROCK

She Loves Pablo is a four-piece stoner/groove rock band from Zagreb, Croatia. Started in late 2005. as a stoner-rock duo (Domagoj – guitars/vocals, Leo – drums), the band immediately recorded its first demo, entitled simply «She Loves Pablo». They played their first dozen shows in and around their hometown, sneaking into the Croatian stoner scene which was rapidly growing at the time, and is now kicking ass with amazing bands such as Ruiz, Cojones, Stonebride, Umor, Toro, and «Sonic Doom Records», an indie label making it all easier. In 2006 the band recorded their second CD, an EP entitled «Country Home», where they experimented with a different, more radio-friendly sound. The following year was a year of change. Hrvoje (bass) joined in, adding that low-frequency ass-kicking which was missing. This gave the band room to experiment and to step away from the stoner-rock stereotypes, combining blues influences with a massive, psychedelic groove.

The band’s debut album, Mother Of All was recorded and self-released in 2009. It contains 10 tracks from almost every era of the band, and beautifully sums up the work of She Loves Pablo.
In the summer of 2010 the band once again took in a new member. Jimi joined, filling in all the holes and making Pablo’s wall of sound even bigger.
In the early 2011 a new single „Gamblin’“ was recorded, and Pablo’s first official video was born.

...time for the lake session...

LAKE ON FIRE
9-10.August 2013

FRIDAY

This time, the LAKE ON FIRE FESTIVAL started on a cloudy friday afternoon in the land of the mountains. The great stage was ready for some action and the beer was cold, the first visitors came up from the hill and the first tunes were played by...Methadone Skies.
They played a very interesting set full of psychedelic stuff and driving parts, which reminded me sometimes of causa sui...with their great mix of delays, echos, flanger and phaser they created the first creative moments on this festival and spread out a good mood to the people. I think...a great start for the LAKE ON FIRE.
After the first break the sun went down and brought the mighty arctic swedish DEVILLE on stage, with their powerful riffs and cool blues influenced licks they performed a really powerful show. After this classical yellow blue stoner rock performance we all needed a stop for our brains to get new power to rock with the greek dudes from 1000MODS.
They started their amps and at the same time it began to rain but with songs like "Vidage" or "Road to burn" there was no reason for the crowd to leave the battlefield. The sad thing was that the rain caused problems for the technical equipment, so the energy supply broke down and the show was hard to play for the band. But the nice crew of the festival did a great job and the last few songs were played fully and raw...
Without any problems SAMSARA BLUES EXPERIMENT entered the stage and did a magic performance, the light effects, the music together with the the mood of the people was one of the highlights on this first festival Friday. After a great setlist and some new songs of the upcoming album, the stage was ready for the fuzzfull power stoner band COJONES from Croatia.

...this guys kicked ass and claimed me the last energy reserves of my neck muscles. A high quality performance with so much great stage moments, also it was wonderful to watch the band having fun on stage. This was definitely the most exciting moment for me and the sign to start the after party with all the nice dudes from the festival, the bands and other friends...

SATURDAY

After a fist full of sleep, 4 cups of coffee and a dental cleaning, we started to grin again as we walked down to the festival area to drink more coffee and make the first pics of Saturday. This day was more crowded as the day before and the weather was fine.

On stage a nice jam session with smooth psychedelic tunes, the first beer in the sun and happy about the decision of the lake on fire people to give the 1000MODS again the possibility to play on stage without any technical problems. And listen to a jam of this beardy greek dudes was a really great experience for all this music enthusiasts, I think. Again a powerful, organic and colourful sound wall...to the main program:

Stonecircus started with slot number one with their interesting mix of stoner metal and progressive rock... They were also a nice opener for this wonderful festival Saturday.

From one Austrian band to the next Dirt Deflector  started to play their power sludge/doom combo with a full and bright sound. Only two people and such a huge sound, it  was a really nice performance and screams for a repetition.
After this performance, the second band from Sweden, Molior Superum, followed. These four young guys rocked my socks off...what an incredible cool sound! Every song had a good vibe and came fat and groovy. Thumbs up for this great band!!! Looking forward to their next album...

Next band on stage TORSO from Vienna, seen before on the VOID Festival and also booked for the October Show in Salzburg with DOCTOR CYCLOPS. Torso have created their own mix of different genres and have very interesting transformations in it. Very varied sound and a whole spectrum in the setlist.
Monsters of the Ordinary inspired by the desert and their stoner gods...they come with down tunes and mangy riffs...a cool classical stoner rock band, also from Austria/Vienna. Perfect to have a beer in the sun.
With the end of the festival coming closer and closer, also some highlights were approaching, The Egocentrics from Romania enchanted us with a beautiful psychedelic sound wall, long and forming song structures, colourful feelings came up and also smokey the bear entered the stage to rock with the guys of the band.
After this spectacle Been Obscene from my hometown Salzburg entered the stage and let rotate our ears with their great mix of alternative prog rock and desert rock. Meanwhile a well known band with a high quality live sound and a great setlist full of nice great songs.
Monkey 3 did the final show and spoiled us with the finest space rock, every time an unforgettable feeling when they play in front of me...all is perfect and the whole band merges in a tidal sound wave...very demanding musicians and really nice people too.

On the whole it was a great festival, in all points perfect organized and a very friendly and hard-working crew team. Big thanks to the whole crew of the festival, especially to Viktor, Jakob for all the nice supply of the SHLGYBT Team. Special greets to the bands...thank you for the good music and the nice mood you have communicated to all...see you on the road.

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR FOR SURE!!!!

...time for a interview...

JEROME CRUTSEN
FROM
Hi Jerome nice to get your time for this little interview...tell me a little bit about your work on Eclipse Productions.

What can you say about the tour with Planet of Zeus in spring 2012 and the minitour with Radar Man from the Moon in summer 2012?

The tour with POZ was a blast being in four countries (Netherlands, Germany, France and Austria) in two weeks. Some gigs got cancelled but also some last minute gigs so that keeps it excited. The highlights were at Oetingervilla in Darmstadt which was kinda like a jamparty. First local support Black Lizard played a short set and after that POZ played their normal set. Afterwards people could join them with their instrument playing some songs and jams. The bands weren’t playing onstage but in the middle of the room with the people standing round them so that created a special atmosphere. Besides that the villa is an awesome place to be with friendly people and everything what a band needs. The other highlight was playing as support for Black Tusk and Red Fang in Salzburg. A sold out Rockhouse and cool to meet the people from both bands and of course you guys from Sativa Root.

We rented a big van from Highway Tiger which was very relaxed with a bed and playstation in it. Pity thing was the playstation was already broken after one or two days.
A thing that I would never arrange for a band is pay to play as we had to in Munich. Paying a lot of money to play for a few people and no food and drinks as even no sleeping place so that was a very expensive night unfortunately. But you learn the more you’re on tour.

with Radar Man from the Moon 2012

The minitour in Italy with the guys from RMFTM was a real fun thing to do. We drove twelve hours one way for just two gigs near Milan but it was worth it. Never had so much fun in that short time haha…we arrived in a small village which I can’t remember the name from anymore. The outside ‘venue’ was like a courtyard with a water well surrounded by some old houses. The night RMFTM performed onstage was the so called Rocknight from a fourdays festival and a couple of other local (stoner)rockbands played also. It looked all a bit amateuristic with simple electricity connections and stuff but the people took good care of us with a lot of bottles of homemade wine and pasta.

The day after was also a little festival on the square of a school in the centre of the village which looked pretty professional when we arrived. Also here we were welcomed very good with everything on it. Too bad a storm spoiled the festival but after some discussions they decided to remove the festival inside of the school which was for RMFTM maybe even better cause of visuals and sound.

What can you tell us about working with the people of Planet of Zeus? What kind of guy’s are they?

The guys from POZ are friendly malakas who are very pretentious and make good quality rockmusic. But to answer this question a bit more generally so far I luckily always worked with nice people and bands who knew what their status is.

What was your first record you bought and how old were you at that time?

Oef, that’s already a long time ago and I cant remember exactly what my first record was actually. But I guess I was 15 years old when I got into the local punkscene and started to listen to a lot of punk- and hardcorebands. Then also I started to collect my musiccollection which is now like 3000 cd’s, 200 vinyl’s and several music DVDs against the wall. Bands like NOFX, Pennywise, Green Day, Offspring, No Use For A Name, No Fun At All, Lagwagon but also hardcore like Ignite, Born From Pain, Earth Crisis, Spirit Of Youth, Morning Again etc. and local bands like Zwaar Klote and Cradle To The Grave I played and saw many times.

Then in 1997 I met some guys in my town Heerlen who played in a band called Cupids Quality who made kinda noise/postrock with influences from Sonic Youth and Blonde Redhead. So I started to listen to a lot of bands like previous and more. Years later after working for several local bands I met a band called 3 Speed Automatic and then the world of stonerrock opened up for me.

Jerome at work with Cojones 2011

Count me three positive things and three negative things while you are on tour.

Positive things;
- having a small vacation
- meet new people and see old friends
- a lot of alcohol and (soft)drugs

Negative things;
- too less sleep
- too much alcohol and (soft)drugs
- dirty toilets, sweaty and stinky vans and Burger King/McDonalds
Ups, bit more then three but some belong together! ;)

What bands are your absolutely heros in the scene of stoner/doom/sludge/psych?

That’s a pretty difficult question because there are so many good quality bands walking round on this fuzzy and psyched planet. Not only the well-known names but also a lot of underground bands who make quality music. To name a few of my favourites; Unida, Kyuss, Karma To Burn, Brant Bjork, Sleep, Earthless, Celestial Season, Astrosoniq, Lonely Kamel, Colour Haze, Green Leaf, Graveyard, Sons Of Otis, Truckfighters. These are just a few cause there are too many to name all of them.
Ofcourse I listen also to a lot of less-known bands like 1000mods, Cojones, Nightstalker, Planet Of Zeus, 3 Speed Automatic, Blowback, The Quill, Deville, Routes, Bushfire, Grant National, Radar Men From The Moon, Arc Of Ascent, etc…I can go on and on.

Do your listen to some other kind of music?

Of course I listen to other music. Main thing is indeed stonerrock but also psychedelic music I listen to even as some heavy rockstuff, metal and postrock. My favourite of all times is and always will be Pearl Jam. These guys make such intense and emotional music, no other band can tip on it is my opinion. Besides that what I like bout them is that they’re famous all over the world but almost never you hear rumours or commotion bout them. Another big favourite of me is Mastodon. What a killerband! I like the cult that is created around them with all this magnificent artwork and of course also I dig their music a lot. Their latest album isn’t the best and not a concept-album but the previous ones are all good to me with maybe ‘Crack The Skye’ one of the best albums from the century. Besides these two bands I listen a lot to other bands also like Baroness, Alter Bridge, Isis, Helmet, Therapy?, Red Fang for example. Sometimes some slow music like on a Sunday morning but for the rest I listen mostly to heavy stuff.

What are your plans for the future, some new tours in planning?

At the moment I’m working on some upcoming tours for bands like Wo Fat (USA) and Abrahma (FR) together, Nightstalker (FR), Ape Machine (USA), The Quill (SE), Banda De La Muerte (ARG) and Planet Of Zeus (GR). Another goal is reached and that is to get a band on the famous Roadburnfestival which is Wo Fat from USA for next year. Besides that at the moment I’m in contact with some pretty well-known Dutch bands which I’m also planning some tours or gigs for but we’re still discussing how and what so I’m not gonna talk bout that too much for now. Keep an eye on my website or facebook

Me and Jerome are hard working on SFTU 2012

Do you have an other job next ECLIPSE PRODUCTIONS? Can you live on that?

Yes, I work as a pedagogic worker in childcare which is a fun job to do. It’s cool to see how these little children grow up and I can teach them some education. Ofcourse also some music education ;). Unfortunately I can’t live on that cause making too less hours.

How would you personally assess the current situation and popularity of Stoner rock?
At the moment there’s a good and big scene going on but I’ve got this feeling that it’s getting too big. So many bands and so many festivals are existing now that people can’t decide anymore what to listen to or where to go to. Don’t get me wrong but it all looks like a big concurrency and on a lot of festivals you always see the same names.Stonerrock is getting more and more commercial which is a good thing in a way cause bands getting more attention now and the scene is getting more accepted by the big audience. But I hope it still stays also underground cause of the atmosphere and the tight relationship between people.

What are the Stoner/Doom/Sludge/Psych bands of the near future...which you can think well?

Radar Men From The Moon, 1000mods, Kadavar, Black Bombain, Monomyth, Nightstalker, Blues Pills, Goat, Wo Fat, Stoned Jesus to name a few.

Some words to the Stonerhead's out there?
Thanks for this interview and giving me the opportunity to tell bit more bout Eclipse Productions and I’d say; keep the spirit alive!

...beer, some great bands and bananas...

 GO BANANAS RELEASE PARTY
with
1000mods
and
COJONES

A night of crazy stonersound, big balls and a lot of banana-beer happened Friday night in Freisitz (Hallein, Austria). The release of the Go Bananas first record “I no seas” was the reason for a lineup all stonerfans would love. The Bananas were supported by Cojones (Zagreb, Croatia) and the greec 1000mods, the headliner of the night.  They have also a new release... you can look on the 1000mods-post, click here. Also Cojones have their own post, look here.
In this post we can re-enjoy this great stonernight, with all the nice guys from the bands. The new album of Go Bananas rocks your socks off, great merchidea...the cover is made out of bananaleafs and smells like banana.
The Disc looks like a LP...
Get "Music Trip"
from the Debut
"I NO SEAS" here
The nice loacation was  very welcoming as always and the beer tasted very well that day.
The mood became even better when the first band entered the stage.
The five guys from Austria, Hubi, Woifi, Aki, Rudl and max ...stoned the crowd and really rocked the house. If you like to buy the album, write them on myspace. After ten minutes of break they came back with even more force and energy. The dancing mascot and the great stage light effects ruled the place and a few bananasongs later, Cojones from croatia started.... to blow our heads into space. an energetic show, hard riffs, aggressive vocals and excellent percussion work. After that great show...and a short break ... the guys from 1000mods began to play.
it was already half past one in the morning and unfortunately we noticed that the crowd became less...
but that did not disturb the remaining people..despite the fact that there was some free space they started a successful and great final act of this awesome stonernight. I've snapped some photos there, and if you like them you can download them here.
Here are some of the collection...

...fucking great new album...

 Stoner straight from Greece
i proudly present the new album
"Super Van Vacation"

Ladies and gentleman, multiple orgasms are happening in your pants if you hear that exploding fat sound, great cover at from Malleus Studios. 1000mods return to earn a place somewhere among the aforementioned records. In their first full length the band seems to be in a serious mood to make the summer last a bit longer. “Super Van Vacation” is a weird title for a debut but nothing is really weird in the world of 1000mods!

1000mods are one of the big players of the blooming Greek stoner scene along with
Ni
Planet of Zeus, Potergeist, Madleaf to name a few. Orange amps, heavy sound, fuzz guitars, laid back mood, catchy riffs…“Super Van Vacation” could be the definition of what stoner rock means.

“Super Van Vacation” is an easy to ride, easy to love record. Get ready for this wagon cause the boys will visit soon! This is honest rock attitude!
Great songs like"Vidage" and "Johnys" are my favourites, in two week i see this dudes live with Cojones(Croatia) in austria(Hallein Freysitz).
