...in the garden of ivyl!!!

IVY GARDEN OF THE DESERT
DOOM/STONER/PSYCH
ITALY

Straight from Trevisio, Italy the power constilation of Andrea, Paolo and Diego release their third full lenght concept album named "I Ate Of The Plant And It Was Good" and it is directly conected to their forerunners "Docile" (2011) and "Love Is Blood" (2012).
"They thought they were playing stoner, but people actually say they don't..." is their description quote on the genre line on facebook. That's right because it's not only simple Stoner Rock but high quality varied rock music with a interesting mix out of progressive rock parts, slower doom parts and driven portion hard rock and in the end there are also some stoner rock influences.

I saw them at the Freak Valley Festival and i was really impressed by this nice guys from Italy. At the drive home from the festival i had the possibility to listen to their album accurate and had a lot of fun with this.
Song's like "Deeper Than Deep", "Ohcysprotom" and "Hang Glider" show the whole spectrum of their skills. Exactly this is what makes the band unique. They create their own sound and so they distinguish to all the other bands in this genre. I'm really happy about this discovery on the main stage at freak valley. The live show had a huge pressure and the progressive parts reminded me stromg on the band "TOOL", with a good feeling on stage and a great performance which they played and a  great set.  So they could impressed a lot of the people i think.
You also have the honor to get your own copy of the Ivy Row. Check out their available records and merchandise on their sites.

..shake your bones...

BONE MAN
STONER METAL
GERMANY
Pink Tank Records

So here is another band from Germany! BONE MAN is a three headed combo from Kiel, which was founded at 2007. This New Album named II is the 7th release of the Band. The Album starts with a percussive fuzzy guitar and bass part that hooked me on. Then, at 01:40 the singer MARIAN starts with his own special work. On the whole recording the Vocals are well arranged, partly with several voices. At the 2nd song “Closer To The Sun” the band shows a bit of 60ies and 70ies feeling. . There’s an Organ too.. WOW.. very impressive! The psychedelic style goes on at the third song, however it then gets noisy with the song “Stuck In The Mire”. Crowned with a kind of Russian Choir Voice.. I really like that Creativity. In “Out Of Phase” there are long noisy guitar vibes and grooving parts too. Nearly a bit progressive. All in All, MARIAN on the Guitar, ARNE on the Bass and ÖTZI on the drums, do a good and creative job on their instruments. It's not easy, to be so melodious in this kind of genre. Rocking songs, with fuzzy noise, cool solos and varied riffs included. Unfortunately I don't know the other releases of BONE MAN. But I think, I have to check them out!

...more brutal tunes...

Dæthlust
Germany
Stoner / Psychedelic/ Doom

Here comes the Quartet Dӕthlust from Germany / Solingen with their Album THE DELIVERER. My first impression was a fat and broad guitar sound, with a nice fuzz. A kind of rough voice, reminds me in parts of bands like “Sons of Otis” or “Hangman's Chair”. But Dӕthlust's singer Mike, has got a quite independently sound. Not easy to get used to this, but somehow impressive.
The Tracks on THE DELIVERER are between 4 and nearly 11 minutes of length. Sometimes the Stoner / Doom Sound turns into a bit progressive style, which makes it interesting to listen to the songs. There is nevertheless a straight line through the songs. My personal favorite was the longest Track KOLOSS. Nothing else to say, a solid and well done piece of work.

...Brutal as Bruto...

BRUTO
Chile
Stoner Rock

„Bruto“, is a band constellation from Santiago, Chile. 4 long-haired guys and a sound a lot of bands dream of for their first record! No big words this time, let’s just get straight to the music: First track, first bomb. Really innovative stuff. The seizmogramm looks like a picasso after these guys have finished their work. Musically a nice mixture of stoner and punk rock. „Icarvs“, the second song begins with a hazy punch directly into your face. This 4 tone riff-monster is followed by some really catchy, rolling beats. Well structured desert rock riffs with solid drums and a cool fuck-you-all-voice. Some guitar impros with a sticky base behind guide you to the end of the track. Hot desert feelings are also coming up their way with „Electroking“. Down the highway with a good load of whiskey in the back and at least one in your hand. Yeah ok, it's the same old thing, but i mean why not?! And also the vocals make it something special. Well done, in my opinion. 4th one. Time to slow down. Also quieter than the other ones. They keep it rolling. Same in „Galopar“. More mid-tempo riffin' to take your mind and roll it into a typical tommy chong joint. Also that seems to be the point where they found their sound. It just soaks you in. The next one continues as brilliant as the last one. So basically the same story, maybe just with the additional the slogan „it's all about the fuzz“. „Odalisca“. Slow and heavy sound wall which starts moving. Now you defintely have to cancel the musical classification from the beginning. No punk at all. Here the self-creation „Fuzzgresivo“ fits really good. Nice to get surprised like this. But that's exactly what i meant. They seem to focus their sound, what really becomes clear in this one. Guitar tunes to fall in love with! Delayed fuzz jam sound...you can't go wrong with this. By far, my favourite track on this record! „Lava“ fits pretty well. It gets faster again. Faster but not less groovier. For all who hoped for a gently ending, Bruto got the right answer: Fuck you! „Taxi shaman“ is definitely the opposite of a sof end. Short, fast, rolling, and no compromises!

HIPOXIA
DOOM/SLUDGE

HIPOXIA was born in Madrid in 2009 when JK, E, and K pooling his music interests and started to play and drink beer together.

In summer 2010 Hipoxia published their first reference: "Doomrehearsal". As the name suggests, it is a 40 minutes rehearsal with three songs full of hateful and filthy doom/sludge/drone with black metal and punk influences. That year, the band began to play live. The debut live was in 2010 december with Dispain. Since that moment, Hipoxia has shared the stage with bands like Monkeypriest, Reznik, Ali Agca, Iron Batasuna or ROLF.

In 2011, the band recorded a new 40 minutes record, but after many misunderstandings with the producer and a change in the band line-up (O. S. entered as the new bassist in october 2011), Hipoxia decided to record again the recording, the three old songs from "Doomrehearsal" and a new track, this time recorded and mixed at Mantis Studio by F. Trych and V. Brown and produced by F. Trych, V. Brown and Hipoxia.

In 2012 21th september Hipoxia published that re-recording, called as the band, in cd format and limited to 500 copies, through three labels: Le Crepuscule du soir, Strange Records and Féretro Records. More than 50 minutes of nihilistic and misanthropic doom. Hatred made noise. Hipoxia.

...mighty western feelings from chango...

Chango
Austria
Stoner Rock / Stoner Metal

This is the proof, that Austria is in a real boom stadium of Stoner - like Bands. An Austrian Trio from Ebensee, attacks the world with his imposing music. The CD SCHNEEBLIND from 20012, recorded at the “Sunset Studio – Mallorca” kicks ass!!

Sure, it is an exotic way, to do lyrics in Austrian / German language. Especially for this kind of music. But that was the thing that really fixed me on! Text fragments that entered my ears like a meditation.. for example: “es duad no oiwei weh....” ; “duad glei neamma weh...”; “und dann is` nur nu sche... “, repeated again and again and.... AGAIN... are very artistically, but memorable too!

The Music:

SCHNEEBLIND contains 5 tracks. The most of them in a length of over 5 minutes. From the first track on, there is a high voltage energy, that crosses the whole production. Good mixed instruments and high audio produced. The Style first goes to Stoner Metal, then takes a ride to a bit of Alternative, than back to Stoner Rock and at least a kind of Psychedelic and Doom. Really a good mix I think!

GET IT HERE

The Songs:

01 Der Florist. The first track shows the whole range of the band. With a cool main riff that bangs your head!

02 Schneeblind takes the listener into the Austrian Alps, onto snowed hills.. or in your own frozen soul, a heart like a white mountain... aaah.. it really inspires me!! :-D

03 S'Weda... The shortest and maybe the weakest track on the CD. The short Guitar solo at the end was the best part for me on this track.

04 Phantomschmerz is the hardest track on the CD. Too bad I couldn't understand the lyrics.. :D but the music goes from a half time played riff into a triplet part and contains exciting breaks and stuff.

05 Liab - starts softly and slow. Like a sweet dream. It's a little psychedelic style on this track. For this reason i really like that song. Doom style played riffs and cool bass parts. The hard end is a good way to close the Album.

So, if you can tolerate the native Austrian language and the mantra kind of sound from CHANGO -SCHNEEBLIND, please give a ear to this band. It's really worth to listen to!!

WANGUNST
STONER/SLUDGE/DOOM
Netherlands

2013 marks the debut of Tilburg stoner-outfit Wangunst. From the deep south of the Netherlands, this powertrio kicks you in the face with balls-to-the-wall riffage somewhere between stoner and sludge.
Debut-EP 'Kempisch Ongemak' (Kempisch Discomfort) contains three originals in the vein of EYEHATEGOD, MYSTIC KREWE OF CLEARLIGHT, DOWN, KYUSS, WO FAT, SNAIL and many others.

Their rendition of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band's classic Blackbird Special hommages both the rhythm 'n blues and stoner tradition of New Orleans.

Shots from Deneb
Sludge/Stoner Metal
Poland

A very interesting mix of different kinds of music, it's kind a sort of Stoner Metal or should i say Trash Stoner...Very fast, hard and crispy recorded. For a debut album it's quiet good and enjoy while listening to it and drive your car. A fast forward band like Black Cobra, Zoroaster, Black Tusk, but surely with they own ideas and a little bit more classical metal attitude.
Shots from Deneb has bite me in the ear and and do not let go...

COYOTES
STONER/DOOM/SLUDGE
ARGENTINA
I don't know much about this band, they are a trio and makes really good and interesting...they have only two song's...so i will say more about these tracks:

IRIS
Iris begins like a old Kyuss song but sadly not in the same quality, the recording is very dull and deep-heavy, it's hard to find structures sheer bass but that what i can hear is good so...a good song.

ATLANTICA
Like Sleep they have a high gained sound and simple song ideas but with some psych parts, hall, delay and minimalistic vocals it's not bored...it kick's ass.

Iron & Stone
Doom Metal
Germany

Iron & Stone is the latest brainchild of Henning Lührig and Stephan Möller, both of them
being active in various metaland
hardcorebands
between 1996 to 2008.
When they
were jamming on some ideas in autumn 2012 it turned out that the concepts grew into
songs too good to just let them dwell on some harddrives and Iron & Stone was founded
as a 2manproject.
The "Maelstrom" demo was recorded between November 2012 and
February 2013 100% DIY. Andreas Brunke of Hildesheims neoprog
outfit Kelewrah
stepped in to help recording the vocals and to do the mastering.

"For fans of Down, Black Pyramid, Crowbar, Potergeist, Triggerfinger...a powerful duo who rocks like five...finest deep, hard, stomping groove doom metal accompanied with a raw and dirty voice, all fits perfectly. Add to that a good sound...what more could you want?"

LOVIJATAR
Helsinki - Finland
Stoner/Pagan/Heavy Progressive Rock

Stoner Rock meets the Witch of Plague

Fasten your Seat Belts and take a trip to Helsinki – Finland.
First of all here are some background Information’s about the Band, taken from their own Biography:
“Lovijatar was born in the shores of lake Saimaa in east of Finland. She is a witch of plagues and sickness and the last in line of devil Piru. She was first mentioned in a collection of Finnish folklore book Suomen Kansan Vanhat Runot 1846. The name of Lovijatar was sang by the old people living in the forests of Carelia...”   “...Lyrical inspiration comes from Finnish folklore, old believes and nature...“

It is very impressive to hear a Finish Rock Group singing in their native Language. And although I can't understand a single word, the Pagan Folk Poetry of this beautiful country enters my brain with the forceful voice of Tommi Vaittinen (Vocals) and Jussi Rautio (Background Vocals / Guitar).

On the First Listening session HÄMÄRÄN KULKIJA is like a vocabulary roller coaster. But then the Stoner Rock riffs come out, and the Sound fits together, with the guitar Work of Petrus Rapo, the Bass Sound of Sam Ollikainen and the Drums of Mikko Neuvonen.

About some tracks:
The First Song “LOUHEN LAHJAT” starts with an acapella Chorus and slides into a typical Stoner Riffing.
“PUUJUMALA”, the second, and also my favorite track on the Disc, comes with an ¾ time signature and a beautiful voice line.
Soft and chilling sounds are on the fourth track  “KUN USVA PEITTÄÄ MINUT SALEIHINSA” and so, all of the 6 tracks have their special note.

...SLUDGY DOUBLE FEATURE....

Soleil Gris
GER/GB/IT
Doom / Stoner Rock

There lies something hidden, something mysterious between the
conceptual imagination of man and most primitive instincts given us by
nature. Those who have discovered the plain of spiritual
subconsciousness will discover the plain of a new form of self renewal.
They have discovered a new sunrise - a new way of
awareness. They have discovered the rising of the grey sun.

Formed in 2010, this three guys from Ulm and Munich, play innovative
and ominous Stoner Rock with a good portion of heaviness as well as
mind blowing psychedelic vibes.

Thanks to max

A very intersting mix of doom, trash metal and driving stoner lick's, the voice of Max remind's me on the greece band LAST RIZLA or sometimes on the godfather of loudness Lemmy.
In total package very satisfactory, a good stuff to rock properly. Recommended songs: "Goatrider", "Sungrazing World", "Frozen Desert"

Mother Sloth
Spain
Stoner/Doom/Sludge
Madrid-based band, started in 2008. Original members were Oscar on drums, Alvaro - guitars, Rafael - vocals, and Jackie - guitars.
Started jamming and playing the first songs, called Pile Of Fortune, Gothic Cyborg, Shadow Witch, songs written by Oscar and Rafael who had the idea for the band since 2007.
The first collaboration with the rest of the band members were songs called Monster Dinner, Revenge , and Hardened.
The band recorded some demos in their rehearsal space to send to a festival, and later on edited these recordings with the title Death Flowers ( 2009).
Then Rafael left, and the band started writing songs in a different direction, perhaps a wider approach, some of them have remained instrumental, such as Holy Wall and Death Flower.
They invited Diego Birch to play bass, he stayed in the band until 2010.
As soon as the band found a new singer, they started rehearsing for the debut. Rolando Fernandez took the position and with him the band started playing around the Madrid venues. The debut show was on 14 April 2011 opening for La Dolorosa.

They kept on writing more songs, such as Supersun, Goliath and also found a new bass player, Gerald.
The band played with some other bands such as Cherry But No Cake (UK), Pura Muerte, Craneon, Teething, Dawn To Dusk, Orthodox, until the beginning of 2012.
Right before getting into the studio to do some good quality recordings, they decided to replace the singer, and called Fernando Polvaredo from local band Fungus to do the job.
They called this collection Hazy Blur Of Life, consisting of four songs, namely Pile Of Fortune, Goliath, MotherSloth and Supersun.
In the band's sound you can find several influences,70's inspired sounds combined with heavy guitar riffs and open chords, in order to give each song the sound it needs.
First band EP, released December 2012 via bandcamp.

DRUNK MOTHERFUCKER'S

Downtempo / Rock / Southern Rock

GREECE
Copro Records/Casket Music

The band was formed by Father W. in 2004, under the name of “the Drunk Earth”, a combination of Crust / Punk / Sludge metal. As “the Drunk Earth” a tape Ep, called “Returnable Bottle” was released through Fistbang Records, limited to 300 hand numbered copies. After several lives and due to members’ personal reasons, the band’s action stopped. Thus, in 2009, “Drunk Motherfuckers” were created by Father W. again from the ashes of “the Drunk Earth”, with completely different Line Up and style of music – a combination of Stoner and Sludge.

An acoustic Ep called “Drunk and Wasted” was recorded and self released in 2009, limited in 666 hand numbered copies, as also a song called “We ain’t give a shit about Sobers” was recorded and included later, in 2010, in Spinalonga’s Records double compilation. With a new line up again, consisted of Father W. (Vocals), Pedro G.E. (Drums), Soulis (Bass), Andrew (Rhythm and Lead Guitars) and Wee (Rhythm Guitars and Lead Guitars), the debut album “…and alcohol for All” was recorded. It is planned to be released by Casket Records in February of 2013.

...stonerfront...

STONERFRONT NIJMEGEN
STONER ROCK
Netherlands
Starting in april 2008, the STONERFRONT NIJMEGEN originally found itself in ever changing line-ups. And though many things were uncertain, one thing was not, the aural path which was to be followed. That being STONER, with flagship outfits the likes of Kyuss and Monster Magnet (their old stuff) as guiding lights. After the release of three tracks ('Supercar', 'World of Geeks' and '299.80') plus a performance at the zomerfeesten in Nijmegen (Holland), Peter Dragt (Bambix, Emperors of the Black) and Remco Verweij (Starfish, Barbarella) deceided it was time to put things in gear and unleash the front in the form of an instrumental powertrio.

In John Munnich they found the bassplayer that they were looking for. The soulfull monolithic riffs, kick ass drumparts and tight bottom-end sprinkeled with tasty samples should be sufficient to take listeners on a testosterone trip. Make no bones about it! Stoner's the word we're looking for. Whilst originality is a thing which is put on the backburner.

EMERORS
STONER ROCK
Netherlands

If you’re looking for drive, groove and great riffs from Nijmegen Rockcity you should definitely check out Emperors. Emperors are a stonerrock group who have been playing music on those terms since 2005.

These guys , made of stone, marble and granite, started off in 2005 playing covers of bands like Kyuss, Fu Manchu and Blind Dog as “Emperors of the Black”. In the year 2010 the creativity itch could no longer be ignored and Emperors started to write and play their own songs.

Now they play their very own kind of Stonerrock; Hard as stone, subtle where possible yet aggressive where it should be. Heavy groovy music with a sharp edge which still reveals influences from Emperors’ musical heroes.
